Acknowledgments

This manual was built for use in the Morphology of the Vertebrate Skeleton course (IB 184L) at the University of California, Berkeley. The laboratory section of the course takes advantage of the extensive teaching collection in the Department of Integrative Biology, and the weekly labs cover the hard tissue morphology of modern vertebrates in a comparative evolutionary and ecological framework. The original lab handouts for the manual were a sort of samizdat that was photocopied and circulated internally by graduate students Jessica Theodor, Chris Bell, and Anne Weil. Samantha Hopkins and Susumu Tomiya digitized many of the old images, added new ones, and expanded the content. This rewriting of the manual includes publicly available images and images for which we received permission. For example, we made extensive use of the illustrations from Chordate Morphology by Malcolm Jollie (1962) that are attributed to Joan Thomas and student assistants. We extend thanks to the unsung heroes behind these fantastic illustrations.. We have also included new specimen photos from the Museum of Vertebrate Zoology (MVZ), the Museum of Paleontology (UCMP), and private sources. An IB 184L alum, Teniah Miller, contributed several illustrations to the new manual, Hannah Liu and Niharika Jadeja worked on the many scale bars in the specimen photos, and Kendall Fitzgerald helped to prepare the manual for publication. We thank the UC Berkeley Library for its support, and for the promotion of open educational resources for students.
